Lake Farm Centre is both an NPO & PBO and registered as a residential home for intellectually challenged adults. We are situated in the tranquil rural Theescombe area, outside of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).
The Centre was established in 1960 and is home to 90 permanent residents; currently some who have been here for 60+ years.
We receive funding from Department of Social Development, SASSA disability grants and a boarding fee is paid, though these are not nearly enough to cover operational cost. We depend on the support of both the private and public sector, though more importantly, we have to create sustainable income stream projects, of which one is our agricultural project. We have a Charity and 2nd Hand bookshop on our premises, and a Coffee / Craft shop – in the last mentioned we sell products we make in our occupational therapy workshops. Some of our products are sold at local markets, where we have a stall.
Residents learn handcraft skills in these workshops and are meaningfully occupied, adding to their sense of making a contribution and being valued. Everyone contributes in some way, and residents assist in keeping their living areas tidy, keeping the grounds tidy and helping with simple maintenance tasks.
We invite anyone interested to see what we do to contact our office to arrange a visit.
